Do you remember...
Domestications™?
I imagine you probably didn’t think you’d be seeing that company’s name anytime soon. Well, if you are not familiar, Domestications, LLC was a company based out of Pennsylvania that sold bedding ensembles and accessories throughout the 90s and 2000s, ceasing operations in 2012 due to declining quality and sales.
I bring them up because, when I was a teenager, my mom began receiving these catalogs in the mail and they were thrilling. Prior to this catalog, my eyes had mostly seen beds covered in handmade quilts or bed-in-a-bag style comforters. Don’t get me wrong, both of these categories can provide stunning offerings, but it was not until Domestications™ that I had come to know piece types like Duvets, bolsters and shams. All my life, I had used pillowcases. Domestications™ sold shams. Truly, the awakening had begun.
Fast forward 25+ years later and I come to find myself designing bedding for teens. The circle was complete. The Threshold designed by Studio McGee partnership would be adding both a teen girl and - AMAZINGLY - a teen boy bedding collection to the brand beginning in 2025. It is not often that Target has provided overtly masculine looks in home decor, so to work on artwork that had an intentionally masculine lean to it was exciting and very much a breath of fresh air.
I failed to mention that mom did let me buy a comforter bedding set (Twin) from Domestications™ all those years ago, and it was glorious; black and gray stripes with a faux marbling in gold that cascaded across the bars. And I loved that damn bedding.
Thank you, Mom.
